Short answer: A good embroidery kit for beginners has a 6 inch hoop, tightly woven cotton fabric, a pre-printed simple design, sorted cotton floss, two or three embroidery needles, small sharp scissors, a threader and a stitch guide. If any of those are missing, or the floss arrives as a tangled bundle, pick a different kit.
We train new artisans at our studio in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh. Everyone starts with the same handful of tools. Here is the list we hand them, so you can check a kit before you pay for it.
More people are starting than ever
Google Trends data for India shows "embroidery kit for beginners" up 190% and "embroidery kit" up 140% between October 2021 and October 2026. "Simple embroidery designs" and "embroidery designs drawing" grew alongside, which tells us most of these people are complete beginners.
The beginner kit checklist
Tick off what your kit includes.
Nice to have, not essential: water soluble marker, thimble, a cheap magnifier lamp.
Red flags in cheap kits
Floss in a loose bundle
It will knot before you start. Sorted cards or bobbins mean the maker of the kit actually stitches.
Thin, shiny polyester fabric
Stitches slip and the fabric puckers. Hold it to the light. If you can read through it, it is too thin.
A design that fills the whole hoop
Beautiful on the box, three months of work in practice. First designs should fit in your palm.
Printing that will not wash out
Some kits print the pattern in permanent ink. If you miss a line, it shows forever. Check the box says water soluble or heat erasable.

Questions
Is embroidery hard to learn?
The first stitches take an evening. Neat, even work takes a few weeks of practice. It is closer to handwriting than to a craft you need talent for.
Can I build my own kit instead?
Yes, and it is often better. A hoop set, a pack of floss, embroidery needles and a metre of cotton from a local cloth shop covers months of practice.
What is the easiest first project?
A single initial or a five petal flower on a cotton handkerchief. Small, quick, and useful when you finish.
