Lambani embroidery with geometric stitching, mirrors, cowrie shells and patchwork on dark cotton

Short answer: Lambani embroidery is the textile craft of the Lambani, or Banjara, community, best known from Sandur in Karnataka. It mixes patchwork, appliqué, mirror work, beads and cowrie shells with bold geometric stitching on dark cloth. Sandur Lambani embroidery holds a Geographical Indication tag.

Searches for Lambani embroidery in India rose 80% between 2021 and 2026 (Google Trends). It is one of the most striking embroideries in the country and one of the least understood outside the South. Here it is in plain words.

What goes into a Lambani piece (tap each)

Patchwork and appliqué

Small pieces of fabric, often reused scraps, are stitched together and onto a base. Wikipedia describes the craft as a combination of patchwork, appliqué, beadwork and embroidery.

Mirrors, coins and cowries

Mirrors are held by rings of stitches, like shisha work. Cowrie shells, coins, ghungroo and beads are added for weight, sound and shine.

Geometric stitching

Squares, triangles, diagonals and grids rather than realistic flowers. Sources commonly count at least 14 named stitch types, with some artisans using far more, including herringbone, cross stitch and knot stitches.

Colour

Saturated red, yellow, orange, blue and white on a darker base. High contrast is the signature.

How to wear it

  • A Lambani jacket or bag over plain denim and a white shirt. Let it be the only loud thing.
  • A patch or border on a solid kurta. See our embroidery kurta guide.
  • Wash heavy pieces by hand, cold, and dry flat. Mirrors and shells hate the washing machine.

Mirror and thread work from our studio

We are in Uttar Pradesh and we do not make Lambani. Our closest work is shisha, the mirror technique the two traditions share.

Questions

Is Lambani the same as Banjara embroidery?

Yes. Lambani, Lambadi and Banjara all refer to the same community and craft. Sandur Lambani is the GI protected style from Karnataka.

How do I know it is authentic?

Look for uneven, hand placed mirrors and shells, real patchwork seams on the back and varied stitches. Printed "Banjara" fabric has none of these.
